Chem Together #4: highlights and photo gallery.
For the second time ChemTogether took place in Science Café, inside the O2 building of VU Amsterdam.
An intimate and cozy environment welcomed all the professionals, students, and representatives of the companies invited for a pleasant afternoon. Together we learnt more about the use of Artificial Intelligence in the chemistry research and pharmaceutical business.
Marco Tibaldi, operations manager of Amsterdam Chemistry Network, opened the event sharing with the attendees the latest news from ACN. It was a great opportunity to launch ACID – Amsterdam Chemistry Innovation Day, which will happen on the 17th of March, 2023, in Science Park (for more info follow us on LinkedIn or Sign up on our website).
After the short intro, Bernd Ensing took the floor. He is an associate professor of computational chemistry at the University of Amsterdam, and director of the AI4Science Lab, a group researchers trying to solve scientific problems with modern machine learning approaches. Bernd prepared an inspiring lecture on the potential that AI offers to scientists from all fields. He engaged the audience with a short and interactive Q&A quiz, and explained what DFT is thanks to an AI-based chatbot. A real peek on the future!
Bastiaan Bergman, the next speaker, shared his experience in accelerating drug discovery using AI. He is an expert in machine vision and deep learning, and a physicist (PhD at TUEindhoven). After working for IBM, Western Digital, and Atomwise, he is now VPof engineering for Model Medicines. Based between Amsterdam and the Silicon Valley, this innovative pharma company is transforming drug discovery using unbiased AI/ML predictions. Using their unique ”constellation model” to simulate target sites, in less than 3 years they reached the clinical trial for one of their drug candidates. The overall investment in the company was of just 5M euro, in a world where numbers of 9 digits are the norm. Impressive!
After the speakers, the audience could enjoy a networking moment with drinks and snacks to finish the event in a relaxing way.
Thanks everyone for participating in the last Chem Together of the year.
A special thanks to ChemistryNL, ACN Gold member and sponsor of the event.
